Moritz Bleibtreu gives difficult men an immediate physical presence, and we value how little explanation he needs to make an impression. The reservation is that, in less demanding parts, charisma can stand in for character.

In Run Lola Run (1998), Lola’s need to reach Manni, played by Moritz Bleibtreu, has to matter before we know much about either of them. Tom Tykwer gives the relationship little room, and the actors make that economy work. Franka Potente carries the film through the effort of her running, while Bleibtreu helps make their briefly sketched relationship convincing. We were anxious for Lola because Potente made reaching Manni feel immediate even through the editing tricks. It is a good use of an actor who can make an impression without needing a long introduction.
Gangster comedy supplied an early breakthrough in Knockin' on Heaven's Door (1997), before Run Lola Run brought him international attention. Leading roles followed, including Tarek Fahd in Das Experiment (2001), a psychologically demanding part that gives his forcefulness more work to do. His frequent casting as criminals and frustrated professionals makes sense: he gives difficult men enough energy to hold our attention without requiring us to approve of them. Comedy remained part of the work through his continuing collaboration with director Fatih Akin, including Soul Kitchen (2009).
In less demanding parts, he can rely too heavily on charisma. We want to know what distinguishes the particular man once the actor has secured our attention, and that is not always sufficiently clear. Run Lola Run can afford its scant explanation because the relationship serves a race that has little time for anything else. The cutting and techno score make its contrivances enjoyable, while Potente supplies the determination that keeps us concerned. Bleibtreu works well within those limits; a slower film would need to give him more to work with.

Biography
Moritz Bleibtreu is a German actor. Born on 13 August 1971 in Munich, he grew up in Hamburg and is the son of actors Monica Bleibtreu and Hans Brenner.
He began appearing on television as a child in the late 1970s, including the series Neues aus Uhlenbusch. After leaving school, he worked as an au pair in Paris and studied acting there and in New York. In 1992 he joined the Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. His breakthrough came with the role of Abdul in Knockin' on Heaven's Door (1997).
Bleibtreu is known for his performance as Manni in Run Lola Run (1998), as well as roles in Das Experiment (2001), The Baader Meinhof Complex (2008) and international films including Munich (2005) and World War Z (2013).
