Biography
Murphy Guyer is an American actor, playwright, writer and director. Born on 25 December 1952 in Dover, Delaware, he moved to New York City at the age of nineteen to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts on an acting scholarship. He began his professional career writing for stand-up comics and improv groups before turning to playwriting in the early 1980s.
His plays, including Eden Court and The American Century, have been produced Off-Broadway and at regional theatres. Between 1996 and 2003 he served as Associate Artistic Director for Playwriting at the Cleveland Play House. Guyer began acting in television and film in 1991, with an early role in Law & Order.
On screen he has appeared in The Devil's Advocate (1997), The Jackal (1997), Rounders (1998), House of Cards (2013) as Oren Chase, Joker (2019) as Barry O'Donnell and Joker: Folie à Deux (2024) as the White Chapel Minister. He played Mr. Pierce in the 2011 miniseries Mildred Pierce.
