Neal Brennan is a useful director of comedians: clear about the format, sparing with visual fuss and attentive to the performer. We trust him more with a sketch or a stand-up set than a feature.

In Neal Brennan: 3 Mics (2017), he gives different kinds of material their own microphones. It is a straightforward device that lets the audience follow a change of style without an elaborate change of scene. His stand-up moves between one-liners, observations and personal stories, so that visible separation has a purpose. His preference as a director for repeated core shots suits this approach, keeping our attention on the person speaking.
Brennan’s career has been built around writing and collaboration. He co-wrote Half Baked (1998) with Dave Chappelle, then co-created and co-wrote Chappelle’s Show (2003), directing sketches in its second series. The important continuity is his involvement in the material as well as its delivery. His first feature, The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard (2009), drew largely negative reviews for scattershot, mean-spirited humour. We would not start there.
New Girl (2011) is the work here we recommend most warmly, though Brennan’s contribution was one episode, directed in 2012. We warmed to the programme when the friendships became more important than making Jess’s awkwardness the whole joke. Zooey Deschanel is good company, and the ensemble gives us a reason to return beyond the next awkward situation. The romantic plotting can be overworked, but it does not undo that affection. This is a useful reminder of how much comedy depends on giving several performers room to be funny, although we would not give one visiting director the credit for a series.
His continuing work on stand-up specials, including collaborations with Michelle Wolf and Seth Meyers, is a more direct guide to his strengths. It is a form in which clear staging and attention to delivery can be enough; elaborate filming can easily become an interruption. Neal Brennan is an American writer, stand-up comedian, director and producer. He was born on 19 October 1973 in Villanova, Pennsylvania.
Brennan co-created and wrote the Comedy Central series Chappelle's Show (2003–2006) with Dave Chappelle. He co-wrote the film Half Baked (1998) and has directed episodes of series including New Girl (2012), The Mindy Project (2013) and Inside Amy Schumer (2013), as well as stand-up specials such as Neal Brennan: 3 Mics (2017).
