Biography
Michael Spiller is an American television director and cinematographer. Born on 1 August 1961 in New Jersey and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he studied film at Purchase College. He began his career as a cinematographer, frequently collaborating with director Hal Hartley on independent films including The Unbelievable Truth (1989).
Spiller served as director of photography on the first four seasons of Sex and the City (1998–2002) and directed seven episodes of the series. He later directed episodes of numerous comedy series, including more than twenty each of Scrubs (2002–2010) and Modern Family (2009–2019), as well as The Office (2005), New Girl (2011), Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013) and black-ish (2014). He won a Primetime Emmy Award and a Directors Guild of America Award for directing the Modern Family episode 'Halloween' (2011) and served as executive producer and director on The Mindy Project (2012–2017).
