Biography

Nelli Fomina was a Russian costume designer. She worked on Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris (1972), Mirror (1975) and Stalker (1979), as well as films by directors including Mikhail Shveitser, Eldar Ryazanov and Nikita Mikhalkov.

Born in Perm in 1937, she graduated from the Moscow Textile Institute in 1965 and joined Mosfilm as an assistant costume designer before becoming a full costume designer in the early 1970s. She later published a book of her costume designs and recollections from the Tarkovsky productions.

Fomina was awarded the title of Honoured Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation. She died in 2020.
