Biography

Nora Swinburne was an English actress. Born Leonora Mary Johnson on 24 July 1902 in Bath, Somerset, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began performing on stage as a child. She appeared in West End productions from the mid-1910s and entered silent films in 1920.

She is credited in numerous British films, including The Citadel (1938) as Mrs. Thornton, The Man in Grey (1943), The River (1951), Quo Vadis (1951) as Pomponia, Helen of Troy (1956) as Hecuba, and Anne of the Thousand Days (1969) as Lady Kingston. She also worked in television until the 1970s.

Swinburne was married to actors Francis Lister, Edward Ashley-Cooper and Esmond Knight. She died on 1 May 2000 in London.
