Biography
Norman Wexler was an American screenwriter and playwright. Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, he attended Harvard University after graduating from Central High School in Detroit. He moved to New York in 1951, initially working in advertising before turning to playwriting in the mid-1960s.
Wexler wrote the screenplays for Joe (1970), for which he received an Academy Award nomination, Serpico (1973, co-written with Waldo Salt, another Oscar nomination and Writers Guild of America Award), Mandingo (1975), Saturday Night Fever (1977) and Raw Deal (1986). He also contributed to Staying Alive (1983). He worked as a script doctor and continued writing plays into the 1990s.
