Biography
Nunnally Johnson was an American screenwriter, producer and director. He wrote the screenplay for the 1934 film The House of Rothschild and contributed to more than fifty films between 1927 and 1967.
Born in Columbus, Georgia, Johnson began his career as a journalist and short-story writer before moving to Hollywood in the early 1930s. He was employed full-time by 20th Century-Fox from 1935 and later produced films and co-founded International Pictures. In the 1950s he also directed several features.
Among his best-known screenplays are The Grapes of Wrath (1940), for which he received an Academy Award nomination, The Woman in the Window (1944), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) and The Dirty Dozen (1967). He died in Hollywood in 1977.
