Olivia Newton-John gives Grease a sincerity that matters among all the showing off. We like her Sandy most when she sings, and wish the dialogue gave her as much to work with.

In Grease (1978), Sandy’s sincerity stands out among people who are rather more interested in being noticed. Olivia Newton-John makes that innocence believable without trying to outdo the larger performances around her. We warmed to Sandy because Newton-John gives her feelings a seriousness that the thin romance rarely earns. We like her in the film, particularly when she sings. The part does not give her enough to work with between numbers.
John Travolta’s Danny is vain, but his physical ease makes the vanity enjoyable rather than exhausting. Newton-John gives him someone believable to play against, without matching his swagger or Stockard Channing’s sharpness. Her singing is the strongest reason to watch her, and it deserves to be treated as acting rather than a pleasant extra. Sandy becomes more interesting in the numbers because Newton-John can express feelings the dialogue has not developed. Between them, these performers earn pleasures the writing does not always supply.
She came to the screen as a singer, appearing in the science-fiction musical Toomorrow (1970) before Grease supplied her breakthrough film role. The subsequent films kept music and romantic appeal prominent: she played a Greek muse in Xanadu (1980), then reunited with Travolta for the romantic comedy Two of a Kind (1983). Those choices suggest how strongly Sandy had fixed the expectations around her. Fewer film roles followed, with a supporting part in the black comedy Sordid Lives (2000) offering a change.
The poor reviews for Xanadu are a useful warning against expecting every vehicle to fit her. We would not make large claims for her dramatic versatility on the strength of Sandy, either. But singing is part of a musical performance, and Newton-John should not receive less credit because it is the part she does best. In Grease, she makes an underwritten character worth caring about. Start there, and give the singing the same attention as the dialogue.

Olivia Newton-John was a British-Australian singer and actress. Born in Cambridge, England, she moved to Australia as a child and began her career as a singer before transitioning to acting.
She is best known for her role as Sandy Olsson in the 1978 musical film Grease, opposite John Travolta. The film and its soundtrack were major commercial successes. She also appeared in Xanadu (1980) and Two of a Kind (1983).
Newton-John received four Grammy Awards and sold over 100 million records. She died in 2022.
