Peter Craig is good at making us care about criminals who are not quite hard enough for the job. We recommend Dope Thief for that warmth, with reservations about how often the plotting gets in the way.
Fi1m perspective
In Dope Thief (2025), Ray Driscoll and Manny Carvalho go around Philadelphia posing as DEA agents, a scheme with room for comedy as well as fear. Peter Craig gives these petty criminals enough warmth to stop the violence becoming the programme’s only attraction. Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura make their friendship convincing and often funny. We were more affected by their vulnerability than by the mounting threats, because the performances gave us two men worth caring about before their troubles became complicated.
Craig’s route into directing runs through novels and collaborative screenwriting. His screenplay debut was The Town (2010), co-written with Ben Affleck and Aaron Stockard from Chuck Hogan’s novel. The adaptations widened into franchise work with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014), co-written with Danny Strong, and he later wrote The Batman (2022) with director Matt Reeves. Dope Thief, adapted from Dennis Tafoya’s novel, brought his first major directing credit alongside writing and showrunning. We have firmer grounds for judging his handling of a story than for declaring a settled visual style.
Gladiator II (2024) offers a less satisfying example of his work with desperate men. Craig shares the story credit with David Scarpa, who wrote the screenplay for Ridley Scott’s film. Paul Mescal gives Lucius conviction, but the character is allowed so little beyond revenge that the performance has nowhere much to go. We cannot assign every screenplay weakness to a story contributor. We can say that a grudge does not give Mescal enough to play.
Dope Thief is the better reason to follow him, though eight episodes give his taste for complication too much space. Editors J. Kathleen Gibson, Jennifer Barbot, Eric Litman and Billy Rich cannot keep the pace as assured as the opening promises, and the story loses us whenever Ray and Manny’s friendship slips out of focus. Dominic Lewis’s music adds pressure that the performances hardly need. The lulls do not let us know the men better; they mostly delay the next problem. Watch it for Henry and Moura, and bring some patience for the plotting.
