Biography
Peter Eyre is an American-English actor. Born in New York City on 11 March 1942, he moved to England at the age of twelve and has been based there since. He trained in acting in Paris after being offered a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and made his professional stage debut with the Old Vic. His theatre work includes productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company and The Old Vic Theatre Company, as well as Broadway appearances such as Polonius in Hamlet (1995).
Eyre is known for supporting roles in several Merchant Ivory films, including Rev. Borenius in Maurice (1987), Lord Halifax in The Remains of the Day (1993) and a part in Surviving Picasso (1996). Other film credits include Casiodorus Rex in Dragonslayer (1981), Mr Pope in Orlando (1992), Lord Hallsham in From Hell (2001) and the Doge in Dangerous Beauty (1998). On television he has appeared in Friends (1998), Midsomer Murders and Merlin (1998).
