Biography
Peter Nichols was an English playwright, screenwriter and director. Born in Bristol, he was educated at Bristol Grammar School and studied acting at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School after National Service. He began writing television plays while working as a teacher, with early credits including work for anthology series in the 1960s and 1970s.
His stage plays include A Day in the Death of Joe Egg (1967), The National Health (1969) and Privates on Parade (1977). Film credits include the screenplay for Georgy Girl (1966) and the script for Catch Us If You Can (1965). He wrote an episode of Inspector Morse broadcast in 1991.
Nichols was appointed CBE in 2018 for services to drama. He died in Oxford in 2019.
