Lindsay Bluth Fünke's vanity is funny because Portia de Rossi plays it with such assurance. In Arrested Development (2003), her materialistic socialite belongs among the Bluths without needing to be made more agreeable. We laughed at Lindsay's self-importance because de Rossi treats it as perfectly ordinary. She is a precise ensemble player, allowing an objectionable character to contribute to the comedy without making the performance itself overbearing.
After early film work in Sirens (1994), her breakthrough came as Nelle Porter in Ally McBeal (1998–2002). The emphasis on her appearance in that early period could obscure what she was doing as an actor. Her own account of joining Arrested Development is telling: she welcomed having dialogue and a character to play instead of concentrating on being attractive. That helps explain why Lindsay matters so much in her work: the part gives her something specific to do with qualities that casting alone might leave unexplored.
Creator and writer Mitchell Hurwitz's Arrested Development gives us the strongest reason to value that skill. We rate the series highly for performances that reward close attention, and de Rossi's precision is well suited to a comedy in which the whole family matters. The storytelling can become tiring, particularly in its later stretches; an actor's timing cannot solve every complication in the writing. But there is enough pleasure in watching this ensemble work to keep that reservation from becoming a reason to stay away.
Further television work included Better Off Ted (2009–2010) and Elizabeth North in Shonda Rhimes's Scandal (from 2014). The latter part uses her aptitude for morally ambiguous professional women. The repeated casting as sharp, ambitious women can make the parts sound interchangeable, though that is not a reason to dismiss the actor's contribution. Start with Arrested Development, but do not feel obliged to race through it.
Biography
Portia de Rossi is an Australian-American actress. She was born Amanda Lee Rogers on 31 January 1973 in Horsham, Victoria, and grew up in the Geelong area. She studied law at the University of Melbourne before changing her name at age 15 and beginning a modelling and acting career.
De Rossi's early film roles included Sirens (1994). She gained prominence as Nelle Porter on the series Ally McBeal (1998–2002), for which the cast received a Screen Actors Guild Award. She is best known for playing Lindsay Bluth Fünke on Arrested Development (2003–2006, 2013, 2018–2019) and Elizabeth North on Scandal (2014–2017). Other credits include Stigmata (1999), Nip/Tuck (2007–2009) and Better Off Ted (2009–2010). She became a US citizen in 2011 and retired from acting in 2019.
De Rossi married comedian Ellen DeGeneres in 2008.
