Biography
Rachel Kempson was an English actress. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made her professional stage debut in 1933 at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. She appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company and other theatre companies, and worked regularly with her husband, the actor Michael Redgrave, whom she married in 1935.
Her film roles included Bridget Allworthy in Tom Jones (1963), Mrs Stoddard in Grand Prix (1966), Ellen Leamington in Georgy Girl (1966), Mrs Codrington in The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968), Lady Lorradaile in Little Lord Fauntleroy (1980) and Lady Belfield in Out of Africa (1985). She also appeared in television productions including Tales of the Unexpected (1979) and The Jewel in the Crown (1984).
Kempson and Redgrave had three children: Vanessa, Corin and Lynn Redgrave, all actors. She died in 2003.
