Biography
Ray Walston was an American actor. He began his career in regional theatre in the late 1930s and moved to New York in the 1940s, appearing on Broadway in productions including Maurice Evans's Hamlet (1945) and several shows directed by George Abbott.
Walston won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as Mr Applegate in Damn Yankees (1955). He appeared in the films South Pacific (1958), The Apartment (1960) as Joe Dobisch, Damn Yankees (1958), The Sting (1973) as J.J. Singleton, Popeye (1980), Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) and Of Mice and Men (1992). On television he starred as the title character in My Favorite Martian (1963–1966) and as Judge Henry Bone in Picket Fences (1992–1996), winning two Primetime Emmy Awards for the latter.
He died on 1 January 2001 in Beverly Hills, California.
