Biography
Rebecca Sugar is an American writer, animator, director, producer and songwriter. Born on 9 July 1987 in Silver Spring, Maryland, she graduated with a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York.
She began her career as a writer and storyboard artist on the animated series Adventure Time (2010–2013). In 2013 she created Steven Universe for Cartoon Network, serving as executive producer, showrunner, writer and songwriter; the series ran until 2019, with follow-ups including Steven Universe: The Movie (2019) and Steven Universe Future (2019–2020). Her work on both series has earned multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
Sugar is bisexual and non-binary. She has spoken publicly about drawing on her own experiences for the series’s LGBTQ themes and representation.
