Biography
Sir Richard Eyre is an English director of film, theatre, television and opera. He was born on 28 March 1943 in Barnstaple, Devon. He began his career as associate director at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh and later served as artistic director of the Royal National Theatre from 1987 to 1997.
Eyre made his feature film debut with The Ploughman's Lunch (1983). His subsequent films include Iris (2001), Stage Beauty (2004), Notes on a Scandal (2006), The Other Man (2008), The Children Act (2017) and Allelujah (2022). He has also directed television productions such as King Lear (2018) and The Dresser (2015).
He received the CBE in 1992 and was knighted in 1997. Eyre has won three Laurence Olivier Awards for theatre direction.
