Biography
Richard Houston Gaines (also credited as Richard H. Gaines) was an American actor. Born on 23 July 1904 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, he began his career on Broadway, appearing in five productions between 1929 and 1942, including as a replacement for Raymond Massey in Abe Lincoln in Illinois.
Gaines made his film debut in The Howards of Virginia (1940). He appeared in supporting roles in films including The More the Merrier (1943), Double Indemnity (1944) as Edward S. Norton Jr., Brute Force (1947), Unconquered (1947) as George Washington, Ace in the Hole (1951) and Love Me or Leave Me (1955). He had a recurring role as a judge in 14 episodes of Perry Mason (1958–1961) and appeared in episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. He worked in over 75 film and television productions between 1940 and 1962.
