Biography
Robert Gillespie (born 9 November 1933) is a British actor, director and writer. Born in Lille, France, he was educated at Sale Grammar School and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from 1951 to 1953. He began his career with two years at the Old Vic Company before working in repertory theatre as an actor and director.
Gillespie appeared in numerous British television sitcoms, including The Good Life (1975) as Mr Carter and Rising Damp (1975) as the Gasman. He starred as Dudley Rush in the ITV series Keep It in the Family (1980–1983). Other credits include Porridge, Dad's Army, Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? and George and Mildred. His film roles encompass At the Earth's Core (1976), Force 10 from Navarone (1978) and Peterloo (2018). He has also written for television, contributed to That Was the Week That Was and directed more than 100 plays.
