Biography
Robert Schenkkan is an American playwright, screenwriter and actor. Born on 19 March 1953 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, he studied drama at the University of Texas, graduating in 1975, and earned an MFA in theatre arts from Cornell University in 1977. He began his career as an actor, appearing in stage productions and in films and television series including Pump Up the Volume (1990) and Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987).
Schenkkan later concentrated on writing. His play cycle The Kentucky Cycle won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1992. He received the Tony Award for Best Play for All the Way in 2014. Other stage works include The Great Society.
His screenwriting credits include the screenplay for The Quiet American (2002) and, with Andrew Knight, the screenplay for Hacksaw Ridge (2016). He also wrote for the television series The Pacific (2010).
