Biography
Roy Dotrice (1923–2017) was a British stage and screen actor. He was born in Guernsey in the Channel Islands and served as a wireless operator and air gunner with the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, spending three years as a prisoner of war after his plane was shot down.
Dotrice trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began his career in repertory theatre before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company. He gained acclaim for his solo performances as John Aubrey in Brief Lives and won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for the 2000 Broadway revival of A Moon for the Misbegotten. On screen he played Leopold Mozart in the 1984 film Amadeus, Jacob Wells in the television series Beauty and the Beast (1987–1990), and Hallyne in Game of Thrones (2012). He was also known for his extensive voice work, including narrating the audiobooks of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series.
Dotrice was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2008. He was married to actress Kay Newman from 1947 until her death in 2007; their three daughters also became actresses.
