Saori Hayami gives reserved characters a clear voice and convincing inner conflict. We value her quiet intensity, though A Silent Voice also shows how much sensitive acting depends on a screenplay making room for it.

Hayami’s voice is clear and composed, well suited to characters whose feelings are not readily expressed. She is frequently cast as refined young women and otherworldly figures, though we are more interested in the conflict than the elegance. Yukino Yukinoshita, the composed female lead of My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU (2013), was an early breakthrough. Playing Shouko Nishimiya in A Silent Voice (2016) brought her into a film requiring particular sensitivity. Shouko is a deaf high-school student who has been bullied, and Hayami gives her a tenderness worth attending to.
Naoko Yamada’s film takes adolescent hurt seriously without treating a bully’s regret as sufficient repayment. Miyu Irino’s Shouya gets considerable room for his self-loathing, while Hayami’s Shouko gets less room than she needs in Yoshida’s screenplay. We felt uneasy whenever her importance seemed to rest chiefly on whether she might forgive him. Hayami’s sensitive work makes us want more attention paid to Shouko’s own experience, which is a credit to the performance and a reservation about the writing. We recommend the film for its tenderness, but its overcrowded middle could have used fewer competing demands on our attention.
Shinobu Kocho in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (2019) puts Hayami’s emotional intensity to work in a recurring role. She returns as Shinobu in Haruo Sotozaki’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle (2025), which we recommend to series followers. The animated combat is inventive, and the demons’ histories give their suffering weight, although repeated flashbacks make a long film feel longer. For an introduction to Hayami, however, Yamada’s closer attention to adolescent behaviour makes A Silent Voice our preference.
The assassin mother Yor Forger in SPY×FAMILY (2022) gives her comedy as well as action, a useful reminder that reserved elegance is only part of what she does. We would welcome more opportunities to hear that brighter side alongside the quiet intensity. There is no need for every role to ask her to contain difficult feelings with good manners. Start with A Silent Voice, with patience for its crowded middle and particular attention to Shouko.

Saori Hayami is a Japanese voice actress and singer. She is affiliated with the agency I'm Enterprise and, as a singer, signed to Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Hayami was born on 29 May 1991 in Tokyo and attended Waseda University.
She is known for voicing Shinobu Kocho in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba series (2019) and its 2025 film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, and Shōko Nishimiya in A Silent Voice: The Movie (2016). Other major roles include Yor Forger in SPY x FAMILY (2022), Yumeko Jabami in Kakegurui, and Yamato in One Piece. In 2016, Hayami won the 10th Seiyu Awards for Best Supporting Actress.
