Biography
Serge Silberman (also credited as Serge Silverman or Szaja Towjané Silberman) was a French film producer. Born in Łódź, Poland, in 1917 to a Jewish family, he survived Nazi concentration camps during the Second World War and settled in Paris.
He began producing in the 1950s, with early credits including Jean-Pierre Melville's Bob le Flambeur (1955) and Jacques Becker's Le Trou (1960). In 1966 he founded Greenwich Film Productions. Silberman collaborated extensively with Luis Buñuel on films including Diary of a Chambermaid (1964), The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) and That Obscure Object of Desire (1977). He also produced Jean-Jacques Beineix's Diva (1981) and Akira Kurosawa's Ran (1985). He received an honorary César Award in 1988.
Silberman died in Paris in 2003.
