Biography

Sheb Wooley was an American actor and singer. Born Shelby Fredrick Wooley on 10 April 1921 in Erick, Oklahoma, he worked as a cowhand in his youth before pursuing music and radio, which led to film roles from the early 1950s.

He is known for his performances as Ben Miller in High Noon (1952), scout Pete Nolan in the television series Rawhide (1959–1965, including one story credit), Travis Cobb in The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), and Cletus Summers in Hoosiers (1986). Wooley also recorded the 1958 novelty hit "The Purple People Eater" and appeared in numerous Western films through the 1990s. He died on 16 September 2003.
