Biography

Sidney Howard was an American playwright and screenwriter. He was born in Oakland, California, graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and studied playwriting at Harvard University under George Pierce Baker.

His play They Knew What They Wanted (1924) won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1925. Howard wrote screenplays for Dodsworth (1936) and Gone with the Wind (1939), for which he received a posthumous Academy Award in 1940. He died in 1939.
