Skeet Ulrich makes troubled men recognisable, which is why his intensity works so well in Scream. We rate him most when a role gives that brooding something to do; the manner alone is not enough.

In Scream (1996), Skeet Ulrich makes Billy's intensity feel close to something we might encounter outside a horror film. He is recognisable as a troubled young man, which gives us something to respond to beyond the demands of the plot. We found him unsettling because that familiarity makes his darker edge harder to dismiss. He works well here because the performance stays grounded; brooding can become an actor's entire contribution, but Ulrich gives us a person to be curious about.
Wes Craven gives him the right setting, with a cast that earns our concern even while Kevin Williamson's script explains the rules of horror. The humour never makes the danger harmless, and Ulrich's intensity is useful in keeping the people from becoming illustrations of those rules. The writing occasionally delays a fright for another explanation, which is the film's chief frustration. We recommend it warmly, but its success belongs to the ensemble, not to a single performance.
The Craft (1996) was the other part of his breakthrough, alongside Neve Campbell, before supporting work including As Good as It Gets (1997). His emotionally conflicted character in the latter provided another use for his ability to make damaged people relatable. There is a limitation here: repeated casting as an intense young man can make the parts hard to separate. The danger is repetition, especially when the writing assumes that intensity will do the work of character.
The move towards television leads gave that intensity more space, with Jake Green in Jericho (2006–2008), then FP Jones in Riverdale (2017–2021). His later paternal and authority figures put the emphasis on men whose responsibilities sit awkwardly with their own troubles. It is a sensible development for an actor who can make a damaged character approachable without making him comfortable company. Skeet Ulrich is an American actor. Born Bryan Ray Trout on 20 January 1970 in Lynchburg, Virginia, he is also credited as Bryan Ray Trout. He trained at New York University after earlier studies at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
Ulrich is known for his role as Billy Loomis in the 1996 film Scream, as well as appearances in The Craft (1996) and As Good as It Gets (1997). He has reprised the character of Billy Loomis in Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023). On television he played FP Jones in the series Riverdale (2017–2021), Jake Green in Jericho (2006–2008) and Rex Winters in episodes of the Law & Order franchise.
