Stephen Dorff makes a villain worth watching without crowding out the hero. We rate his assurance, though Blade also shows the limits of asking a capable actor to compensate for a thin script.

In Blade (1998), Stephen Dorff's Deacon Frost seems quite certain that he deserves as much attention as Wesley Snipes. Dorff makes that confidence entertaining, giving Stephen Norrington's violent vampire film someone worth watching between the fights. We enjoyed him more than we expected to, because his assurance stops those stretches from feeling like a wait for Snipes to return. He is often cast as someone morally dubious, and the appeal is clear here: he can hold his own opposite a forceful lead.
That does not make Blade a fully satisfying film. The storytelling is thin, and Dorff cannot make its repeated violent encounters matter for long merely by looking convinced. Kris Kristofferson's Whistler is similarly welcome company, but the pleasure both actors provide leaves the film's neglected hero no better developed. It is a good choice for action-horror enthusiasts, but we would not use Frost alone to decide what Dorff can do.
He had already led The Power of One (1992) as PK and played Stuart Sutcliffe in Backbeat (1994) before Blade brought him mainstream attention. Those earlier parts matter when considering a career that has moved between studio films and independent work rather than settled into villainy. Michael Mann's Public Enemies (2009), with Dorff supporting as Homer Van Meter, is another reminder that he has not always needed the leading part. Supporting work suits him, because the assurance we value in Blade does not depend on his being the centre of every scene.
Sofia Coppola's Somewhere (2010) marks a useful turn towards an introspective lead role as Johnny Marco. It gives us a reason to look beyond the antagonists and consider what happens when a film asks him to sustain our interest in one person. His later work includes Roland West in the third series of True Detective (2019), a substantial television part that also belongs in any assessment. Try Blade for the confident antagonist, then Somewhere before deciding that antagonists are all he is for.

Stephen Dorff is an American actor. Born Stephen Hartley Dorff Jr. on 29 July 1973 in Atlanta, Georgia, he began his career as a child actor and first appeared in the horror film The Gate (1987).
He rose to prominence with his portrayal of Stuart Sutcliffe in Backbeat (1994) and gained wider recognition as Deacon Frost in Blade (1998). Dorff has also appeared in films including Somewhere (2010) and portrayed Roland West in the third season of the anthology series True Detective (2019). He is the son of composer Steve Dorff.
