Biography
Stephen Whittaker (28 June 1947 – 7 February 2003) was a British actor and director who worked primarily in film and television. Born in London, he trained as an actor at the Corona Academy after attending Henley-in-Arden School in Warwickshire. He began acting in the mid-1960s, appearing in To Sir, with Love (1967) and the Doctor Who serial The Web of Fear (1968).
In 1985 he completed a director's training course and made his directing debut with the Channel 4 drama trilogy What If It's Raining? (1986), written by Anthony Minghella. He went on to direct episodes of Agatha Christie's Poirot (1992) and Inspector Morse (1993), as well as Portrait of a Marriage (1990), Hearts and Minds (1995) and Closing Numbers (1993).
His final project was the feature film The Rocket Post (2004), released posthumously with a dedication to his memory. He died in London following complications from surgery.
