Biography
Steve Purcell is an American cartoonist, animator, game designer, writer, director and voice actor. He is the creator of the Sam & Max media franchise.
Purcell graduated from the California College of Arts and Crafts. He began his career with comic strips and freelance work before publishing the first Sam & Max comic in 1987. He joined LucasArts in 1988, contributing to games including the Monkey Island series and Sam & Max Hit the Road. He later worked at Pixar, where he co-wrote and co-directed Brave (2012) and developed Cars on the Road (2022).
His voice credits include roles in Cars (2006), Brave (2012), Toy Story That Time Forgot (2014), Toy Story 4 (2019), Inside Out 2 (2024) and Hoppers (2026) as the Amphibian King. He received an Eisner Award in 2007.
