Biography
Takehiro Hira (平 岳大) is a Japanese actor born on 27 July 1974 in Setagaya, Tokyo. The son of actors Mikijirō Hira and Yoshiko Sakuma, he was raised in Japan until the age of 15, attended Moses Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island, and graduated from Brown University.
He made his theatrical debut in 2002 in Rokumeikan by Yukio Mishima and worked with his father, playing Iago opposite Mikijirō Hira's Othello. He received early recognition for portraying the last shogun Yoshinobu Tokugawa in the NHK taiga drama Atsuhime and has appeared in several films by Takashi Miike, including Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (2011).
Hira played the lead in the 2019 British series Giri/Haji, for which he received a BAFTA nomination. His international credits include Lost Girls & Love Hotels (2020), Snake Eyes (2021), Gran Turismo (2023), Shōgun (2024) as Ishido Kazunari, for which he was Emmy-nominated, and Rental Family (2025) as Shinji Tada.
