Biography
Thomas Mauch is a German cinematographer and film producer. Born on 4 April 1937 in Heidenheim an der Brenz, he trained as a photographer and began working in film in the late 1950s as a camera assistant to Edgar Reitz. He became a freelance cinematographer in 1963.
Mauch is best known for his extensive collaborations with directors Werner Herzog, Alexander Kluge and Edgar Reitz. He served as director of photography on Herzog films including Signs of Life (1968), Even Dwarfs Started Small (1970), Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972), Stroszek (1977) and Fitzcarraldo (1982). He has also worked on numerous films with Kluge and Reitz.
Mauch has received several awards for his cinematography, including the Deutscher Filmpreis on three occasions and the National Society of Film Critics Award.
