Tina Kellegher makes family scenes convincing by giving her characters concerns of their own. We value her grounded humour in The Snapper, even when the writing pays closer attention to the father.

In the family scenes of The Snapper (1993), Tina Kellegher's Sharon Curley has her own concerns, even when her father is getting the attention. Kellegher and Ruth McCabe, as Kay, give the Curleys a life beyond Dessie's troubles. We warmed to the household because these women remained people in their own right, rather than an audience for Colm Meaney. Kellegher's contribution is easy to undervalue in a comedy so taken with its father, but the pleasure of those scenes depends on it.
That breakthrough was followed chiefly by regular television work. Ballykissangel (1996) gave her a long-running role as Niamh Quigley; she joined Fair City as the soap villain Ger Lynch in 2019. Later screen work includes Trish in Normal People (2020) and Tina in Phyllida Lloyd's Herself (2020). The recurring family and community settings suit an actor whose naturalistic style makes a character feel settled among other people.
Stephen Frears's The Snapper remains the clearest reason to seek her out. Roddy Doyle's writing gives the ensemble plenty to work with, and Kellegher helps make its affection for this family persuasive. There is a limit to that affection, though: the film understands Meaney's Dessie more readily than it examines what is expected of Sharon and Kay. Sharon is a pregnant teenager, yet the father's troubles receive the closer attention. That imbalance belongs to the film, and Kellegher's performance makes it more noticeable by giving us someone else worth attending to.
Kellegher's grounded style is a good fit for comedy that depends on people knowing one another too well. Humour and resilience need not make a character uncomplicated, and her Sharon benefits from that distinction. She can be part of an affectionate ensemble without making us forget that its members have separate interests. Return to The Snapper for Kellegher and McCabe together, even if Meaney is the reason for pressing play.

Tina Kellegher is an Irish actress. She played Sharon Curley in the 1993 film The Snapper, directed by Stephen Frears and adapted from Roddy Doyle’s novel. She is also known for portraying Niamh Quigley (later Egan) in the BBC television series Ballykissangel (1996–2001).
Her other screen credits include In the Name of the Father (1993), Normal People (2020) and Herself (2020). She has appeared in the RTÉ soap Fair City as Ger Lynch. Kellegher is married to location manager Gordon Wycherley; they have two sons.
