Tunde Adebimpe is a welcome, understated presence in an ensemble, especially when a director lets his singing belong to the scene. We rate him most in Rachel Getting Married, though his smaller parts can leave too little to judge.

In Rachel Getting Married (2008), Tunde Adebimpe sings without accompaniment, and the song feels entirely at home in the drama. As Sidney Williams, he gives Jonathan Demme's wedding ensemble a gentler presence alongside Anne Hathaway's painfully convincing difficult guest. We were moved by the way his singing made a busy ensemble film feel intimate. The celebrations run long, but his musical contribution belongs among these people, and never feels like an interruption put in to accommodate a singer.
The striking thing about the career is that small parts were not where it began. Jump Tomorrow (2001) gave him the lead, George Abiola, in an independent romantic comedy; Rachel Getting Married brought wider notice seven years later. By Nasty Baby (2015), he was again taking a lead in an independent film, this time for Sebastián Silva. Alongside such work came Peter Parker's chemistry teacher, Mr. Cobbwell, in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), and Sam in Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story (2019). That movement between leading and supporting work makes more sense than treating every appearance as a musician's excursion into acting.
Twisters (2024) puts him in the supporting role of Dexter, with Lee Isaac Chung directing. Adebimpe's understatement is welcome in a film whose frightening storms keep being interrupted so the characters can be sad. But there is a limit to what a sympathetic supporting player can do with familiar writing. Our reservations about the film remain: the cast cannot make those interruptions less wearying simply by being good company.
The reservation about Adebimpe is how readily this kind of casting can settle for having him around. When a part chiefly offers a little music or a reassuring presence, it can leave us with too little evidence of the actor's decisions. His work is most persuasive when the director gives that quietness something to do within the scene. Start with Rachel Getting Married; the wedding runs long, but we would stay to hear him.
Biography
Tunde Adebimpe is an American actor and musician. He is a founding member and co-lead vocalist of the band TV on the Radio.
Adebimpe studied film at New York University and began his career in stop-motion animation. His acting credits include Rachel Getting Married (2008), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Marriage Story (2019) and Twisters (2024), in which he played Dexter. He has also appeared in the series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew (2024) and provided voice work for animated series including Pantheon (2022).
In 2025 he released his debut solo album, Thee Black Boltz.
