Biography
Victor Jory (1902–1982) was a Canadian-American actor of stage, film and television. Born in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, to American parents, he trained at the Martha Oatman School of the Theater in Los Angeles and began his career on stage before making his Hollywood debut in the early 1930s.
He appeared in nearly 200 films and television productions over a 50-year career. Early roles included romantic leads, but he became known for villainous or sinister characters, among them Jonas Wilkerson in Gone with the Wind (1939), Injun Joe in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938) and Captain Arthur Keller in The Miracle Worker (1962). Later credits include Indian Chief in Papillon (1973) and The Narrator in Mackenna's Gold (1969). He also starred as Lamont Cranston in the 1940 serial The Shadow and had a lead role in the television series Manhunt (1959–1961).
Jory was married to actress Jean Inness from 1928 until her death in 1978; their son Jon Jory became a prominent theatre director.
