Biography
Wojciech Kilar was a Polish composer of classical and film music. Born on 17 July 1932 in Lwów (now Lviv, Ukraine), he studied composition in Katowice and Kraków before spending time in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. He began scoring films in the late 1950s and went on to write music for more than 100 productions.
Kilar worked extensively with Polish directors including Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Zanussi. His international profile rose with the score for Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992). He later composed for Roman Polanski's Death and the Maiden (1994), The Ninth Gate (1999) and The Pianist (2002), as well as Jane Campion's The Portrait of a Lady (1996).
His film scores received several awards, including an ASCAP Award for Bram Stoker's Dracula and a César Award for The Pianist. Kilar died on 29 December 2013 in Katowice.
