Adriana Barraza gives older women quiet strength and occasional comic energy. We value how much she can suggest from the edge of a family scene; the frequent grandmother casting deserves less enthusiasm.

In Blue Beetle (2023), Adriana Barraza’s Nana Reyes stays at the edge of family scenes, looking as though none of this is especially new to her. Ángel Manuel Soto’s film is better whenever it pays attention to that household, and Barraza is part of the reason. She gives Nana enough composure to suggest that the family commotion can safely carry on without her intervention. We like the performance because she does not keep asking us to notice it.
George López’s Rudy gets the biggest laughs, while Barraza is content to remain watchful. That distinction matters when a supporting part could easily amount to waiting for the next line. We felt protective of the Reyes family because their dinner-table company gave us more pleasure than any of the fights. The plot is standard superhero business, and our enthusiasm drops considerably whenever the film leaves the household to get on with it.
Her international breakthrough came through Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Amores Perros (2000) and Babel (2006), before work that moved between Mexican and Hollywood film and television. Working-class and immigrant women have been a particular strength, played with an inwardness that does not make their troubles any less clear. There have been genre departures, including Drag Me to Hell (2009), but grandmother and maternal roles recur. We would like more films to give her the space those supporting parts cannot always provide.
The concern is typecasting, not a lack of force in the acting. Speaking about substantial parts for older women, she has said: “It’s a character we rarely see, and if we see them they are generally in background and we know very little about their lives.” Nana gives us reason to be curious about the woman sitting there, even when the film has other priorities. Start with Blue Beetle for the family, and make allowances for how often the superhero plot interrupts their company.
Biography
Adriana Barraza is a Mexican actress and director. Born on 5 March 1956 in Toluca, State of Mexico, she studied acting at the Autonomous University of Chihuahua. She began her career in Mexican television in the 1980s and worked as an acting coach and director of telenovelas before moving into film.
Barraza gained international recognition for her role as Amelia in Babel (2006), for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She had earlier appeared in Amores perros (2000). Other film credits include Drag Me to Hell (2009), Rambo: Last Blood (2019) and Blue Beetle (2023), in which she played Nana Reyes. She has also worked extensively as an acting teacher.
