Biography

Angela Lansbury was a British-American actress and singer whose career spanned eight decades in film, television and theatre. Born in London in 1925, she made her screen debut in the 1944 film Gaslight as a conniving maid, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

She received further Oscar nominations for The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945) and The Manchurian Candidate (1962). Lansbury was widely known for her role as Jessica Fletcher in the television series Murder, She Wrote (1984–1996) and for voicing Mrs. Potts in the Disney animated film Beauty and the Beast (1991). She also appeared in Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), Nanny McPhee (2005), Mary Poppins Returns (2018) and The Grinch (2018).

On stage she won five Tony Awards for productions including Mame, Gypsy and Sweeney Todd. Lansbury received six Golden Globe Awards, an Honorary Academy Award and was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. She died in Los Angeles in 2022.
