Biography

Bela Lugosi was a Hungarian-born actor who worked in stage, film and television. Born Béla Ferenc Dezső Blaskó in Lugos, Kingdom of Hungary (now Lugoj, Romania), he trained at the Budapest Academy of Theatrical Arts and made his stage debut in 1901. He appeared in Hungarian theatre and films before moving to Germany in 1919 and then to the United States in 1921.

Lugosi is known for his performances in Dracula (1931) as Count Dracula, The Black Cat (1934) as Dr Vitus Werdegast, Son of Frankenstein (1939) as Ygor, Ninotchka (1939) as Commissar Razinin, The Wolf Man (1941) as Bela, and Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) as Dracula. He originated the role of Dracula on Broadway in 1927 before reprising it on screen.
