Biography

Beryl Mercer was a Spanish-born actress who worked primarily in the United States on stage and screen. Born in Seville to British parents, she began performing as a child and made her Broadway debut in 1906. She appeared in numerous Broadway productions through the 1920s, including Outward Bound (1924) as Mrs Midget.

Mercer appeared in more than fifty films between 1916 and 1939, often in maternal or elderly supporting roles. Among her credits are All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), The Public Enemy (1931), East Lynne (1931) as Joyce, Cavalcade (1933) as Cook, The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) and The Little Princess (1939). She died in Santa Monica, California, in 1939.
