Biography

Betty Field was an American stage and film actress. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and began her professional career on the London stage in 1934. She appeared in several Broadway productions before making her film debut.

Her role as Mae in Of Mice and Men (1939) established her as a dramatic actress. She went on to appear in films including Kings Row (1942), The Great Gatsby (1949), Picnic (1955), Bus Stop (1956), Peyton Place (1957), BUtterfield 8 (1960), Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) and Coogan's Bluff (1968), while maintaining a strong preference for stage work. Field died in Hyannis, Massachusetts, in 1973.
