Biography

Carmine Coppola was an American composer, flautist, pianist and conductor. He studied flute and composition at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music, and performed as a flautist with the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini, the Detroit Symphony and Radio City Music Hall.

He contributed original music to several films directed by his son Francis Ford Coppola, including The Godfather Part II (1974), Apocalypse Now (1979, co-composed with Francis Ford Coppola), The Outsiders (1983), The Black Stallion (1979) and The Godfather Part III (1990). He also composed for a 1980 reconstruction of Abel Gance's Napoléon.

Coppola won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for The Godfather Part II and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score for Apocalypse Now.
