Chandra Wilson has spent two decades as Miranda Bailey, the surgeon who frightens the interns and looks after them anyway, and since 2009 has directed the programme as well. One role, but a complete one, and she has never been caught coasting in it.

Miranda Bailey meets her interns on their first day and gives them her rules, in order, like a sergeant who has seen this batch before and expects to see the next one. Chandra Wilson plays it without raising her voice and without a smile, and the point is that she needs neither. Everything Bailey does for the next twenty years is in that list: the standards are how she looks after them, and the interns work that out slowly. We believed her at once, which is rarer than it sounds on a programme where everyone else is talking about themselves.
The part was not written for her. Bailey was conceived as a petite blonde white woman, Wilson was cast instead, and the character became what she brought to it, which is authority with nothing decorative on it. Before that there had been New York stage work and guest television parts through the 1990s and early 2000s, and two small film roles, in Jonathan Demme's Philadelphia (1993) and John Sayles's Lone Star (1996), neither big enough to be remembered for. Grey's Anatomy (2005) gave her what character actors seldom get: one part, kept for as long as she wanted it, with room to change. Bailey goes from resident to chief, and Wilson lets the job age her without softening her.
Since 2009 she has directed the programme too, twenty-seven episodes as of 2026, along with episodes of Scandal, The Fosters (2015) and Good Trouble, and she is a co-executive producer. We have not reviewed her episodes on their own and will not pretend to. What we can say is that she told an interviewer, "As a director, I do refer to the older episodes' style in a way because I really think it illuminates our stories the best," and our review of the programme says much the same thing less politely: the first few years are the ones worth having. A director who thinks the show was better when it was quicker is a director we are inclined to trust.
The caveat is the obvious one. Our score for Grey's Anatomy is 68, and it is 68 because the programme has run long enough to wear out what made it sharp, and Wilson has stayed for all of it. She is not the reason it flagged, but she has never had to prove she can do this anywhere else. Twenty years in one hospital is a career; it is not yet a body of work. If she takes the directing somewhere without a scrub room, we would like to see it.
Biography
Chandra Wilson, also credited as Chandra Danette Wilson, is an American actress and director. She trained at Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and earned a BFA in drama from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where she studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.
She is best known for playing Dr. Miranda Bailey on the ABC series Grey's Anatomy since 2005, a role she has also portrayed on Private Practice and Station 19. Wilson has directed multiple episodes of Grey's Anatomy since 2009. Earlier credits include appearances in Philadelphia (1993), The Sopranos (2004) and guest roles on Law & Order and Sex and the City.
Wilson has received a Screen Actors Guild Award, two NAACP Image Awards and several other honours for her performance as Bailey, along with Emmy nominations. She has also directed episodes of Scandal and The Fosters.
