Biography
Charles D. Hall (1888–1970) was a British-American art director and production designer. Born in Norwich, Norfolk, he began his career as a scenic designer with Fred Karno’s music hall troupe in England.
He collaborated with Charlie Chaplin from 1918 to 1936, serving as production designer on Modern Times (1936) and contributing to City Lights (1931) and The Circus (1928). At Universal Pictures he was art director on many films directed by James Whale, including Frankenstein (1931), The Invisible Man (1933) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935), as well as Dracula (1931), All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) and The Phantom of the Opera (1925). He later worked on B-films and television, and received two Academy Award nominations for art direction.
