Biography

Cicely Tyson was an American actress whose career spanned more than seven decades in film, television and theatre. She was born in New York City on 19 December 1924 and died on 28 January 2021.

She became known for her portrayals of strong African-American women. Notable film roles include Rebecca Morgan in Sounder (1972), Sipsey in Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), Constantine Jefferson in The Help (2011) and Mrs Hightower in Last Flag Flying (2017). On television she appeared in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1974), House of Cards (2013) and How to Get Away with Murder (2014–2020).

Tyson received three Emmy Awards, a Tony Award for The Trip to Bountiful (2013), an Honorary Academy Award in 2018, a Peabody Award and other honours including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
