Biography

Clayton Hartley is an American production designer. He studied art and architecture at Northwestern University and began his career in the film industry as a production assistant on Frances (1982) and Tender Mercies (1983). He progressed through the art department on films including Bad Boys (1984) and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension (1984), later serving as assistant art director on Hoosiers (1986).

Hartley worked as art director on Jerry Maguire (1996) and The Other Sister (1999) before becoming a production designer. His credits include Almost Famous (2000), American Wedding (2003), Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004), Step Brothers (2008), We're the Millers (2013), The Big Short (2015), Daddy's Home (2015) and Don't Look Up (2021). He has frequently collaborated with directors Cameron Crowe and Adam McKay. He received an Art Directors Guild nomination for his work on Almost Famous. Hartley has been married to Beverly Randolph since 1988.
