Biography
Debra Monk is an American actress, singer and writer. Born on 27 February 1949 in Middletown, Ohio, she graduated from Frostburg State University in 1973 and received an MFA from Southern Methodist University in 1975.
She first gained attention in theatrical circles as a co-writer and performer in the 1982 musical Pump Boys and Dinettes. Monk won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for Redwood Curtain (1993) and received further Tony nominations for Picnic (1994), Steel Pier (1997) and Curtains (2007). She won an Obie Award for The Time of the Cuckoo (2000). Her film roles include Aunt Dorothy in Prelude to a Kiss (1992), Madge in The Bridges of Madison County (1995) and Pam Garrety in The Devil's Advocate (1997). On television she won a Primetime Emmy Award for her recurring role as Katie Sipowicz in NYPD Blue and has appeared in series including Grey's Anatomy and Damages.
