Biography
Dore Schary (born Isadore Schary) was an American screenwriter, producer, director and playwright. He began in New York theatre as a stage director, actor and publicist before moving to Hollywood in the early 1930s as a screenwriter for studios including Paramount, Warner Bros. and Columbia.
Schary received an Academy Award for the original story of Boys Town (1938), which he also co-wrote. He joined MGM as a writer and later became vice-president in charge of production from 1948 to 1956. Among the films he produced or executive-produced during this period were The Spiral Staircase (1946), Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948), They Live by Night (1949), The Set-Up (1949), Battleground (1949) and Westward the Women (1951). After leaving MGM he founded his own production company and wrote, produced and directed the stage play Sunrise at Campobello (1957).
