Biography
Egon Brecher was an Austrian-born actor and director. Born on 18 February 1880 in Olomouc, Moravia, Austria-Hungary (now the Czech Republic), he studied philosophy at the University of Heidelberg before turning to acting. He performed on provincial stages in Germany and Austria, and later acted and directed in Vienna, including at the Stadttheater, until 1921. He was also involved in Yiddish theatre initiatives in the city.
Brecher moved to New York in 1921 to appear on Broadway. He became a naturalised American citizen in 1927 and relocated to Hollywood in the late 1920s, where he appeared in foreign-language versions of American films and subsequently in numerous English-language productions. His film credits include The Black Cat (1934) as the Majordomo, Werewolf of London (1935), Mark of the Vampire (1935), The Devil-Doll (1936), Rebecca (1940) and So Dark the Night (1946). He died of a heart attack on 12 August 1946 in Hollywood, California.
