Fi1m perspective

Eric Bana makes troubled men convincing through quiet presence and body language. We value his restraint, though UNTAMED shows how easily a persuasive actor can end up supplying the interest that a script has left out.

In UNTAMED (2025), Eric Bana’s Kyle Turner is most engaging when he has Lily Santiago’s rookie Naya Vasquez to contend with. The difference in their experience gives Bana’s reserve something to work against. We enjoyed their scenes together because Santiago’s alertness makes this familiar gruff investigator less predictable company. Bana makes Turner’s troubles feel credible without making him especially agreeable. The series is mixed, but its central pair give us a reason to stay with it.

That reserve was not where he started: sketch comedy in Full Frontal (1993–1997) preceded the dramatic breakthrough of Chopper (2000). For the latter, he gained weight and studied the man he was playing, taking a conspicuously physical route into the part. Hollywood followed with Black Hawk Down (2001) and Ang Lee’s Hulk (2003). Steven Spielberg’s Munich (2005) gave his intensity an inward use as Avner, a role that draws on his capacity for vulnerability.

After supporting parts in the 2010s, The Dry (2020), as Aaron Falk, and UNTAMED brought prominent leads again. His ability to suggest conflict through body language suits these brooding roles, though there is a risk in becoming so dependable at them. A script can take his seriousness for granted and neglect to give it much substance. UNTAMED does precisely that when it expects Turner’s troubles to carry stretches of routine investigation. Bana cannot make those detours feel necessary.

What works better is the time he and Santiago get to develop a partnership rather than attend to another strand of plot. Rosemarie DeWitt, as Jill Bodwin, also helps make the personal material worth following. Bana benefits from these encounters because they let him respond to another performer instead of relying on the familiar signs of a troubled detective. We would happily watch him and Santiago working together again, though the case would need considerable attention first. His next difficult man deserves a script that asks more of him than looking troubled.
