Biography
Franco Di Giacomo (1932–2016) was an Italian cinematographer. Born in Amatrice, he began his career as an assistant to Aldo Tonti and worked for many years as a camera operator on films including Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s Cleopatra (1963), Vittorio De Sica’s Marriage Italian Style (1964) and Sergio Leone’s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) and Once Upon a Time in the West (1968).
He made his debut as director of photography in 1970 with Salvatore Samperi’s Kill the Fatted Calf and Roast It. Among his notable credits as cinematographer are Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971), The Night of the Shooting Stars (1982), for which he received a David di Donatello, Amityville II: The Possession (1982), Dearest Relatives, Poisonous Relations (1992) and The Postman (1994). He collaborated with directors including Bernardo Bertolucci, the Taviani brothers, Nanni Moretti, Ettore Scola and Michael Radford.
In 2000 Di Giacomo was awarded the Flaiano Prize for his career. He later taught cinematography at the ACT Multimedia Academy in Cinecittà and died in Acilia, Rome.
